  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 5 oz bittersweet chocolate (60% cacao), chopped
  • Black gel icing color
  • Red gel icing color
  • 2 1/4 cups unsalted butter
  • 8 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 cup natural unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 57 tbsp water/cream
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 4 oz red Wilton candy melts
  • 2 tbsp heavy whipping cream
  • Sprinkles

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease two round cake pans.
  2. In a bowl, combine flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt; whisk together.
  3. Cream butter, vegetable oil, and sugar until fluffy. Add eggs one at a time followed by vanilla extract.
  4. Gradually mix in dry ingredients alternating with buttermilk until just combined.
  5. Melt bittersweet chocolate; let cool slightly before adding to half of the batter.
  6. Divide batter into two bowls: one plain and one colored with black gel icing.
  7. Alternate spoonfuls of batters in prepared pans and swirl gently for a marbled effect.
  8. Bake for about 20 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. Cool completely before frosting.
