  • 1 pound lean ground beef (or turkey)
  • 1 teaspoon minced garlic (12 cloves)
  • 1416 ounces coleslaw mix (or 6 cups finely sliced cabbage)
  • 1/3 cup low sodium soy sauce (or tamari)
  • 1 teaspoon hot sauce
  • 1 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • pinch ground cloves (optional)
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons sesame oil
  • 3 green onions (sliced)
  • sesame seeds (for serving, optional)

Instructions

  1. Heat a large heavy-bottomed skillet over medium heat until it's hot.
  2. Add the ground beef to the skillet and break it up using a wooden spoon, cooking until browned.
  3. Drain any excess grease from the skillet and add the minced garlic, sautéing until fragrant (about 30-60 seconds).
  4. Add in the coleslaw mix or finely sliced cabbage and toss to combine with the ground beef and garlic.
  5. Pour in the low sodium soy sauce and stir well to coat all the cabbage and meat evenly.
  6. Add hot sauce, ground ginger, onion powder, and cloves if using, stirring well to integrate all flavors.
  7. Cover the skillet with a lid or add about ¼ -⅓ cup of water to prevent sticking and cook until the cabbage softens (about 2-5 minutes).
  8. Remove from heat and add toasted sesame oil, tossing everything well to combine.
  9. Taste your dish and adjust salt, pepper, or seasonings as necessary.
  10. Serve warm in bowls topped with sliced green onions and sesame seeds if desired.
