Ingredients
Scale
- 1 pound lean ground beef (or turkey)
- 1 teaspoon minced garlic (1–2 cloves)
- 14–16 ounces coleslaw mix (or 6 cups finely sliced cabbage)
- 1/3 cup low sodium soy sauce (or tamari)
- 1 teaspoon hot sauce
- 1 teaspoon ground ginger
- 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
- pinch ground cloves (optional)
- 1 1/2 tablespoons sesame oil
- 3 green onions (sliced)
- sesame seeds (for serving, optional)
Instructions
- Heat a large heavy-bottomed skillet over medium heat until it's hot.
- Add the ground beef to the skillet and break it up using a wooden spoon, cooking until browned.
- Drain any excess grease from the skillet and add the minced garlic, sautéing until fragrant (about 30-60 seconds).
- Add in the coleslaw mix or finely sliced cabbage and toss to combine with the ground beef and garlic.
- Pour in the low sodium soy sauce and stir well to coat all the cabbage and meat evenly.
- Add hot sauce, ground ginger, onion powder, and cloves if using, stirring well to integrate all flavors.
- Cover the skillet with a lid or add about ¼ -⅓ cup of water to prevent sticking and cook until the cabbage softens (about 2-5 minutes).
- Remove from heat and add toasted sesame oil, tossing everything well to combine.
- Taste your dish and adjust salt, pepper, or seasonings as necessary.
- Serve warm in bowls topped with sliced green onions and sesame seeds if desired.
